  2. Integrated Information Theory (IIT)

The more integrated and differentiated the information, the higher the level of consciousness. IIT offers a mathematical approach to measuring consciousness, bridging science and philosophy.


  3. Higher-Order Thought Theory (HOT)

    HOT posits that consciousness arises when the brain generates thoughts about its own mental states. In other words, being conscious means being aware that you are aware. This self-reflective aspect distinguishes conscious from unconscious processes.


  4. Recurrent Processing Theory (RPT)

    RPT focuses on the brain's feedback loops. It argues that consciousness emerges from recurrent neural activity, where information is processed repeatedly within sensory areas. This theory highlights the dynamic nature of conscious perception.
